In the article “N.C. mom charged after son drowned in hurricane's floodwaters is rare case, lawyers say N.C. mom charged after son drowned in hurricane's floodwaters is rare case, lawyers say” by Erik Ortiz has made a lot of controversy. Dazia Lee was driving her one-year old son through the floodwater from Hurricane Florence and her son drowned and now is charged with manslaughter. Even though it was not the smartest idea to do with her son it has grabbed the attention of criminal defense experts and civil rights organizations that they are thinking this is racial bias towards her because she is African American. One thing Coring Mack said who is the president of the Charlotte-Mecklenberg branch of the NAACP was “We know that African Americans are disproportionally charged and arrested in the country, and this is no different.” Lee thought the whole time she was driving he was going to be safe she was wrong, but she is really upset with the loss of her child and now she must worry about this charge she got that could affect her life for the rest of her life. I think this story is very interesting because I think I agree with mostly everyone else who read the story that this charge is way too extra and this women does not deserve this she obviously didn’t want her son to drown and she has to live the rest of her life without her son and they are just making her life miserable charging her with manslaughter I think she should just be able to move on from this charge just to help her with all this pain she will have inside her. I think this story is important to talk about because it is something that has always been a hard decision to charge someone for accidentally killing someone that they love, and the story is always different and its interesting how some people handle the situation. Another reason I thought this story was important because the police were saying how all these charges were appropriate according to the law and others would disagree with that and that probably why this story was shared worldwide to show how much controversy it caused to the public. Overall this story was very eye opening and interesting how it played out and maybe later this week they will change her charges or maybe not we will see but if they do change the charges that would probably make the women and the public extremely happy. Also, this article shows an emotional topic that some people might either agree or disagree with her charge and it could be used by others to show if this is how they should charge people for situations like Dazia Lee’s. This story was very interesting in how all of it played out and to see how much other stuff goes on during the week and see if this whole charge gets changed just because the story went on the national news and that the public aren’t happy about it.

  1. I really enjoy reading this like for real - this brings up good conversation in class, i feel that she shouldn't have be changed in the first place losing a son in the first bad enough! but this question still stand ... why she go out in the first place? its crazy out already what was so important you had to go out for - i do see the problem but honestly why every time something happen to Africa america its goes to racism you know! its not like she want him to die but it happen i think she should have been more responsible with having a kids knowing its bad outside.
