How David Brooks Is Successful

Marshall Rudd
I think the author that is more successful delivering his thesis statement is David Brooks because Charles Blow didn’t deliver his thesis statement as well as David Brooks did. One thing Brooks does that makes him successful is how he list great comparisons to know how he feels about some of the topics he talks about. One example that was great was “being online is like being a part of the greatest cocktail party ever.” Another example that he said was “offline learning is more like being a member of a book club than a cocktail party.” I think these comparisons are excellent because some people might agree with these things and might find that to be a comparison they can use a lot to tell people how the online life really is. The second thing that makes him successful is that is list some conclusions from researchers about attention span to help readers understand his main idea of his article. One of the conclusions Brooks put in the article was that “online life nurtures fluid intelligence and offline life is better at nurturing crystallized intelligence.” I think since he put these conclusions in his article shows the readers some things they might not have known, and they become more interested in reading it. The last thing that makes Brooks successful is how he shows his opinionated language throughout his article. I think this makes him successful because people like to agree with someone's opinion and spread their opinion to others and this might spread the word to others and they might start reading more of David Brooks articles. An example of his opinionated language that he used was when he said “I know some people who are relaxed and their best selves only when online. Since they feel more in control of the communication, they are more communicative, vulnerable, and carefree.” This is an opinion that a lot of people could argue about some people might say they are more careful online, so all his opinionated language makes people more interested to read more things David Brooks has to say and this makes David Brooks a successful person.
